The Vision
SciFrica is a collection of images with a futuristic perspective influenced by Africa's rich background of exploration and innovation. Africa also has a long and storied history of scientific discovery, including advances in astronomy, metallurgy, and medicine. SciFrica draws upon these legacies to imagine a future that is technologically and scientifically advanced, with characters both human and machine colliding in all areas from arts and culture to politics and economics.
SciFrica was created as a response to the lack of representation of black characters in speculative fiction. Historically, science fiction and fantasy have not featured people of color, and many stories have perpetuated harmful stereotypes and racist tropes. At the root, SciFrica: Vol 1. seeks to create alternative visions of the future that are inclusive and celebratory of African and Afro-diasporic experiences.
